Information Design
Exercise G
KEYWORDS: LO5, LO6, Elegant Communication, information design, pictograph, corn, typography, Illinois, color
I tried to re-imagine a chart I made previously about genetically engineered corn in Illinois and push myself to try a new format. In this case, I chose a pictograph. I was able to design it on Infogram. I stuck with only re-visualizing corn for this attempt and found a corn icon to use as a bar chart. Color played into this as I made the corn icons yellow to be easily recognizable. For the crop yields and cost info I used green to indicate a positive. While subtle, I also used red, yellow, white and black throughout... which just happen to be the state colors of Illinois. As far as typography, I was limited to what Infogram gave me, so the concordance might be a little boring. I tried to keep the grouping of like data together and make sure the relevant numbers were proximal to the icons representing the data. Overall, I'm happy with the direction I took. However, if I had to do this again, I would take a more critical eye toward the brand positioning of some of my text at the bottom of the piece. It might be a bit confusing to have a narrator phrase asking if genetically engineered corn is safe and then have text indicating that it is safe. I think I might have sent mixed messages there, so it serves as a good reminder for future information designs. Taking this piece from and MSC perspective, I think it is a good example of LO5 and LO6 from the standpoint of critically analyzing message and then communicating them in a simple, yet elegant fashion through effective information design.
